![]() The wild & wooley, fearlessly funky and slightly insane Falls Lode Pottery Studio and friends. We got together on a Thursday evening to eat and visit without the distraction of firing. A goofy time was had by all. Of course, I am taking the picture. Carol, Emily and Raymond showed up too. Rumi came later after work. It's a good thing 'cause if you don't show up those ladies figure you are fair game for trashing! All in good fun of course. :-) Left to right; Lorraine, Alicia, Ginny, Harriet, Katherine, Sherry and Daryl. |
![]() Here's Loraine with two of her new pieces; a pot with a nice mix of colors and a clown mask. Loraine is known for her masks (the clowns are a new variation) and her lanterns (or illuminaries). You can see her work, along with Emily's dragons and Ginny Wolf's pots, in the Sunburst Gallery, Main Street, downtown Placerville. |
![]() Sherry Howell throws a pot on the wheel in her home studio. It sure looks clean. Even her clothes look clean... hmmmmm... wonder how she does that!?? ![]() Daryl Williams, a computer programmer in real life, shows off his first pottery piece... a fierce single-horned dragon (perhaps inspired by Emily's winged beasts?). He fired it saturday 12/15/01. |
A Naked Raku pot by Sherry Howell
The process involves applying a thick coat of slip resist to a bisque fired pot. The slip cracks as it dries. When fired and then placed with newspapaer or other combustible material the carbon enters the cracks. After it has cooled the slip resist can be peeled away to reveal a lacy pattern and white areas that have been protected from the carbon smoke. |

Pit Firing is another way to fire Raku pots. Check out the page on our experiment with a pit fire in Coloma, California. |
