This garden was created in a long narrow space that once was a horseshoe pit when my kids were young. Later it became a place to store my fixer-upper boat and other odds and ends. As you will see, it is becoming a place to rest, watch the wildlife and remember that any day you wake up is a good day.

1999/ Second Year / front 2 beds

A few bags of Amend rototilled into the soil, some scalloped bricks, several bags of concrete for a sidewalk, 4 or 5 benches I made out of a fallen oak and we had the beginings of the meditaion garden (also refered to as the shade garden). This picture shows how the entrance looked in spring of the second year (1999).

Rock people.
They don't eat much and are pretty quiet.

rock-person sentry
Rumi hunts these rocks, runs them down then brings them home to plant in our gardens.

The horseshoe pit is transforming into a garden!

The raised beds are two bricks high, lined with aviary wire (the #!%^ moles got in anyway) and filled with mushroom compost. Here the left bed is filled in. I saved the right side for Rumi. I didn't want her to feel left out.

Rumi said Wouldn't it be nice to have a fire out here? I said just point and click. I dug a hole, sunk in an oil drum, mounted a grate part way down and created an air draft to the side of the hill. Then I made a lid and painted it yellow. With the brown radiating bricks it looks like a sunflower.

You can also see two of my benches. Ever tried to saw an oak tree in two vertically with a chain saw? I don't advise it.

I've been in the process of creating this pond for some time now (never mind how long.)

The first order of business was to rent a Ditch Witch to dig a trench from the house to the back of the garden for power lines. I only had 3 hours to do it in. That was a mean undertaking.

Then I figured out the shape I wanted, dug the hole and drug rocks from all over for the waterfall.

That done, I have been studying up on ponds. Eventually I will be a genious on the subject and then we will have a pond. A heart shaped pond with a smaller higher pool emptying into it.

Do you see the little house in the back on the left side? It is my electical box for the power to the pond, with a birdhouse in the attic. Sometimes I even amaze myself!
